UTM links for Reddit, X and newsletters
Last updated Nov 3, 2026
Add a few words to the end of the links you share, and every post, profile and newsletter shows up as its own row: visitors, signups and revenue.
Why tag your links
Without tags, many visits arrive as "Direct": apps like X, Slack, Discord and email clients often don't say where a click came from. A tagged link always does, and it tells two posts on the same site apart.
The three tags
- utm_source: where the link is, in your own words: reddit, x, producthunt, the newsletter's name. This becomes the source.
- utm_medium: what kind of place it is: social, community, email, cpc (paid ads), referral. This picks the channel.
- utm_campaign: which post or launch, so you can tell them apart later. Optional.
Add them after your app's address with ? and join them with &:

Examples
| Where you share | Add to your link | Channel | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Reddit post | ?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=community&utm_campaign=launch-post | Communities | |
| Your X profile | ?utm_source=x&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=profile | Social | x |
| A newsletter that mentions you | ?utm_source=newsletter-name&utm_medium=email | newsletter-name | |
| Product Hunt launch | ?utm_source=producthunt&utm_medium=community | Communities | producthunt |
| A paid ad | ?utm_source=meta&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=spring | Paid | meta |
| A DM or a friend's blog | ?ref=dm | Referral | dm |
Short on space? ?ref=reddit works too (so do ?via= and ?source=), and the channel comes from the name when we know it.
Tips
- Use one link per place you post, and keep the names lowercase and simple. Reddit and reddit are counted as the same source.
- Tag links to any page of your app, not just the home page.
- Some communities remove tracking tags or frown on them. Post the plain address there: the referring site (such as reddit.com) is still recorded in most cases.
- Ad platforms add their own click IDs (such as gclid from Google Ads); those visits count as Paid even without tags.
Where you see the results
Your dashboard's "Where your customers come from" table shows each source with its visitors, signups and revenue; switch it from Channels to Sources. Tap a source in the Sources table to filter the whole dashboard to it.
